Prepared piano
This is a piano technique I was previously unaware of, but after looking into this topic more, I started to be inspired. To summarise this technique, you prepare a piano with bits and parts inside the piano or strings to modify the sound, creating a more percussive sound. This technique was popularised by John Cage. What I’m most interested in this technique is how much a piano’s sound changes but is still familiar. It creates a lot of atonality, microtones and harmonics but sounds interesting.
It gave me the idea to use this technique and preparation on my Autozither, and because I’m using motors with varying speeds, there will be many conflicting rhythms and tones, which I believe could sound unique. It’s something I wish to experiment with once my prototype is complete.
