Gallery 46 installation proposal
VISUAL SKETCH / DIAGRAM
WORK TYPE: Multichannel sound sculpture
TECH SPECS: 5 surface transducers, 5 sheets of metal from 30cm2 to 70cm2 in size, 1 preamp, 1 raspberry pi and fishing wire
GALLERY LOCATION: Gallery 1
WORK DESCRIPTION: This ambient piece uses surface transducers, playing forest ambience through metal sheets hanging from the ceiling, juxtaposing the visuals with the sound. Being able to walk around the installation is important, as the sonic properties will evolve as you change position in the gallery space. The placement of the sheets will line up with the location of the recordings in relation to the forest where the recordings will take place.
The idea of surface transducers came from my previous interference orchestra, where I had an idea of using a transducer on a surface with a contact microphone on. Learning how loud a transducer can get with any surface, I realised feedback isn’t needed.
I decided on metal sheets due to how well metal resonates and because the metal sheets will look visually intriguing. I will use thin aluminium sheets as they’re lighter, cheaper and resonate better than thicker steel sheets. I haven’t tried other metal alternatives but aluminium has all of the properties Im looking for.
I chose gallery 1 because the small, intimate room would allow a more enveloping experience with less equipment. Other rooms could work too, but id like another smaller room as this concept would be much harder to execute in a larger room.
