Global Sonic CulturesVisiting Practitioner

Daisuke Ishida

Daisuke Ishida is a sound artist who explores the artistic practice and theory in sound, space and perception. exploring time-based media to open up new perspectives on spatialities, while his understanding of space extends from the physical to the social and political realm. Becoming a professor of sound art in 2020 at the berlin university of arts. In 2002 he co-founded The SINE WAVE ORCHESTRA, creating multiple sound installations using only sine waves.

His case study of perspectives on spatialities was interesting. A barrage of noises echoes through the exhibition, with multiple rooms around allowing the sound and perception of sound to change showing off his core idea of sound, space and perception. Recording the sounds in each room and able to play that space anywhere.

Sine wave orchestra focuses on installations, performances and only uses sine waves. The focus on sine wave is due to its pure tone, with no overtone.

looking at the space of a room is important, as the sounds volume is distributed in a different way in a different room. The image below shows the sound profile of the room that they were using.

Q: Do you see a space within a place as a catalyst to understand your own politics?

A: I’m really interested in the freedom of explorations, there should be 1000 different ways of approaching a piece, not just one. However, you interact with it and where you’re standing will change your experience. We were always thinking about how to empower people to want them to stay. It’s more of a design question led by the art direction.
