Post-analysis of Darsha Hewitt’s guest lecture
The first blog I made was on Darsha Hewitt and her guest lecture, and 3 years later, it still intrigues me. Her talk looked into planned obsolescence and how it’s only worsening as time goes on. Her work uses objects designed to be thrown away as sound sculptures. Along with this interesting topic, she made some amazing visuals which accompanied this, such as the electrostatic bell choir. She also uses old electronics and turns them into synthesisers or other sound-making objects, which is a topic I find interesting.
Looking back on this, my portfolio project looks into similar issues of planned obsolescence, and we have a similar ethos about upcycling. Along with this, I was conscious of what upcycling is for a while but was never that interested in it. After seeing her upcycling, I had a newfound respect for it.
