Creative Sound ProjectsWeekly diary

Sonic brainstorm

The majority of this week has been spent creating my composition. The main issue was my sudden creative block. Because of this, I have created multiple motifs that can be turned into songs. But by doing this, i have figured out what to do and am using these motifs as inspiration.

Ideas

Idea 1

This piece was inspired by Angel – Massive Attack and Ossuary – Baths. I tried to mix experimental ambience with real instruments. But after working on this piece for a while, I ran into a block where I couldn’t add anything. I love this idea and sound but I will have to finish it another time.

Idea 2

This was made with a loop from Silent Hill 4 and an aux cord interference. With the inspiration of the group piece, I attempted to use an “old” sample, where I found some bomber chatter from World War 2. After this, I used a randomiser to generate chords with reverb. Like the last piece, I wasn’t able to add to this but used the inspiration from the sample idea in my final composition.

Idea 3

This piece utilises my DFAM and a VST with reverb. Ending with a string section, which was added due to the theme. I thought about what they would use in the 1920s and came to the answer of an orchestra. While this won’t be my final composition as I found it too repetitive and was too difficult to add onto it. But I will use the inspiration of the string section.

Idea 4

This was inspired from My Noise, a website where you can create songs with sliders. I accidentally found this while looking for a polyrhythm generator. I really enjoyed the sound of their preset, “Twin Black Lodges” and attempted to recreate it. I will not be using this piece as I have stolen it and cannot think of anything to add onto it.

The composition

First concept

First concept

Recently I have been listening to a lot of modern prog metal and bands such as TesseracT, Karnivool, Toska, Messhugah and the DOOM eternal OST. Because of this, most of the music I’ve been producing has been metal-inspired pieces. This piece is the idea of what I want to do, but still has a lot of modification to get where I want it to be.

The second concept with inspiration

This starts with an ambient intro with the bomber chatter from Idea 2. I attempted to tell the story of a bomb going off and used explosion sounds when the recording starts to distort. After this, I changed the riff in the first section which goes into a similar ambient part. Soon I will be attempting to use a string section more effectively in this piece.
